PART THREE READING COMPREHENSION
Directions: Read the following three passages. Each passages is followed by several questions or unfinished statements. For each of them there are four choice s marked A, B, C and D.Choose the one that fits best according to the information given in the passage.
A
When a child is told he is "uncool", it can be very painful. He may say he doesn't care, and even act in ways that are opposite of cool on purpose. But ultimately, these are simply ways to handle sadness by pretending it's not there.
Helping a child feel better in school had to be careful. If you say, "Why are you worried about what other children think about you? It doesn't matter!" children know that it does matter. Instead, an active way may be best. You could say, "I'm going to do a couple of things for you to help you feel better in school."
If a boy is having trouble making friends, the teacher can help him. The teacher can arrange things so that he has chances to use his abilities to contribute to class projects. This is how the other children learn how to value his good qualities and to like him. A teacher can also raise a child's popularity in the group by showing that he values that child. It even helps to put him in a seat next to a very popular child, or let him be a partner with that child in activities, etc.
There are things that parents can do at home, too. Be friendly when your child brings others home to play. Encourage him to invite friends to meals and then serve the dishes they consider "super". When you plan trips, picnics, movies, and other shows, invite another child with whom your child wants to be friends.
What you can do is to give him a chance to join a group that may be shutting him out. Then, if he has good qualities, he can start to build real friendship of his own.
56. A child who has been informed of being "uncool" may ________.
A. care nothing about it B. develop a sense of anger
C. do something uncool purposely D. pretend to get hurt very much
57. A teacher can help an unpopular child by ________.
A. seeing the child as the teacher's favourite
B. asking the child to do something for partners
C. forcing other children to make friends with the child

58. How can parents help their child fit in better?
A. By cooking delicious food for him.
B. By being kind to his schoolmates.
C. By forcing him to invite friends home.
D. By taking him to have picnics in the park.

A. Children doesn't care others' comments on them.

60. The passage mainly talks about ________.
A. how to help an unpopular child
B. why some children are unpopular
C. who is responsible for unpopular children
D. how to find out good points of unpopular children

Yu Pengnian is an 88-year-old real estate Chinese businessman. He amassed(積聚) a fortune of $1.3 billion dollars during his career but instead of keeping the money and living like an emperor, he decided to give it all away. All of his fortune will be spent on helping poor Chinese students get a better education.
And Yu isn’t the only super-rich person in China who has this spirit of giving. Chen Guangbiao, a Jiangsu recycling tycoon, has given millions of dollars to charity (慈善)and promises to give all of his money to charity when he dies.
Yu and Chen are among the many businessmen who have become prosperous during China’s economic rise. An American business magazine, Forbes, estimates that there are 117 billionaires in China and hundreds of thousands of millionaires. What sets Yu and Chen apart from the rest, though, is their tremendous generosity(慷慨,大方) when it comes to donating money to charity.
Last week Bill Gates and Warren Buffett came to Beijing. Gates and Buffett, two of the world’s richest men, are also the world’s biggest philanthropists. They invited fifty of China’s richest people to have dinner with them and talk about the spirit of giving. At first, only a few people accepted their invitation. It seemed some of the invited guests were afraid that Buffett and Gates were going to pressure them into giving their wealth to charity.
A lot of people are angry at the billionaires who are not willing to give away their fortunes. They criticize them for being miserly and not caring about the poor and the less fortunate. But I think this criticism is wrong. A gift, any gift, should come from the heart. Instead of criticism, these reluctant billionaires should be encouraged to follow the examples of Yu Pengnian and Chen Guangbiao. Encouragement is always a better strategy than criticism. As we say in English, “You can catch more flies with honey than with vinegar.”
( )61. Yu Pengnian will spend all of his fortune in _______

B They had dinner with Bill Gates and Warren Buffett, talking about the spirit of giving.

Some scientists say that animals in the oceans are increasingly threatened by noise pollution caused by human beings.
The noise that affects sea creatures comes from a number of human activities. It is caused mainly by industrial underwater explosions, ocean drilling, and ship engines. Such noises are added to natural sounds. These sounds include the breaking of ice fields, underwater earthquakes, and sounds made by animals themselves.
Decibels (分貝) measured in water are different from those measured on land. A noise of one hundred and twenty decibels on land causes pain to human ears. In water, a decibel level of one hundred and ninety-five would have the same effect.
Some scientists have proposed setting a noise limit of one hundred and twenty decibels in oceans. They have observed that noises at that level can frighten and confuse whales.
A team of American and Canadian scientists discovered that louder noises can seriously injure some animals. The research team found that powerful underwater explosions were causing whales in the area to lose their hearing. This seriously affected the whales' ability to exchange information and find their way. Some of the whales even died. The explosions had caused their ears to bleed and become infected.
Many researchers whose work depends on ocean sounds are against a limit of one hundred and twenty decibels. They say such a limit would mean an end to important industrial and scientific research.
Scientists do not know how much and what kinds of noises are harmful to ocean animals. However, many scientists suspect that noise is a greater danger than they believed. They want to prevent noises from harming creatures in the ocean.
66. According to the passage, which of the following is increasingly dangerous to sea creatures?
A. The man-made noises. B. The noises made by themselves.
C. The sound of earthquakes. D. The sound of the ice-breaking.
67. Which of the following is discussed in the third paragraph?
A. Different places with different types of noises.
B. The very human ears sensitive to all types of noises.
C. The same noise measured differently on land and in the ocean.
D. The ocean animals' reaction to noises.
68. As to the influence of noises on whales, which of the following statements is true?
A. They are deaf to noises.
B. Noises at a certain level may hurt them.
C. They are easily confused by noises.
D. Noises will limit their ability to reproduce.
69. We can know from the passage that many researchers think that the noise limit of one hundred twenty decibels would _____.
A. prevent them from doing their research work
B. benefit them a lot in their research work
C. do good to their health
D. increase the industrial output
70. According to the passage, what will scientists most probably do in the future?
A. They will try their best to decrease noise.
B. They will work hard to cut down noise pollution.
C. They will study the effect of different noises.
D. They will protect animals from harmful noises.
PART FOUR WRITING
SECTION A
Directions: Read the following passage. Complete the diagram/Fill in the numbered blanks by using the information for the passage. Write NOT MORE THAN 3 WORDS for each answer.
Lead poisoning (鉛中毒)happens when lead is present in high levels in the blood of a person. It is one of the most common medical problems found in children. And it’s important to recognize the presence of lead in children’s bodies because lead is very harmful.
Children often go around and put things in their mouths like paint peelings. This is one of the main causes of lead poisoning. It has also been found that children born in poor families have higher chances of getting exposed to lead.
Some of the common symptoms of lead poisoning in children are headaches, stomach pains, hair loss, muscle weakness, and weight loss, etc.
Lead poisoning can have bad effects and can lead to heart diseases, kidney diseases and neurological(神經(jīng)系統(tǒng)的)problems. It can also result in mental dullness and a low I . Q. level. There have been cases where lead poisoning proved to be terminal for children.
It’s difficult to easily recognize whether a child is affected by lead poisoning, as the symptoms of this disease can occur due to some other medical problems. Therefore, children under the age of 6 should regularly be checked to know the level of lead in their blood through blood tests. It’s possible to completely cure a child with lead poisoning through treatment. Usually the oral medicine chelator(螯合劑)is given to the children. Sometimes, children are given an injection(注射)for reducing the lead level. Children who have very high level of lead in their blood would need treatment for a long period of time and would also be put on a special diet.
Parents have to take certain precautions(預防) to lower the chance of lead poisoning in children. Cleaning the house regularly and removing shoes at the door after coming in form outside will prevent the lead particles from entering the house. Children should be put on a healthy diet, containing high proportions(比例)of calcium and iron, such as eggs, milk, fruits, potatoes, etc, which helps to keep the lead levels in control, in the children’s bodies.
In short, it’s a must to be cautious and careful, and protect your children from the horrible results of lead poisoning.

SECTION B (10 marks)
Directions: Read the following passage. Answer the questions according to the information given in the passage.
Although many Chinese students say that their knowledge of English grammar is good, most would admit that their spoken English is poor. Whenever I speak to Chinese students they always say, "My spoken English is poor," However, their spoken English does not have to remain "poor". 1 would like to suggest that there may be some reasons for their problems with spoken English.
First, they fail to find suitable words to express themselves due to a limited vocabulary. Obviously the better answer is to expand their vocabulary. However, you can speak with a limited vocabulary, if your attitude is-positive. Others will follow you as long as you use the words that you know.
Second, they are afraid of making mistakes. Sometimes they make mistakes when they are speaking because they are shy and nervous. Yet students should remember that their goal should be FLUENCY NOT ACCURACY. Your aim in writing is to be accurate following the rules for grammar and using the right words and spelling them correctly. However, in speaking, your aim is fluency. You want to get your message across, to talk to someone in English as quickly and well as you can even though sometimes you may use a wrong word or tense. But it doesn't matter because the person you are speaking to will understand you and make allowances for any mistakes he hears.
The third reason is that not enough attention is paid to listening. You have one mouth but two ears! All that hearing is necessary for you to start speaking.
Fourth, most Chinese students are reactive rather than proactive(積極主動的)language learners. Instead of actively seeking out opportunities to improve their spoken English they passively (被動地)wait for speaking opportunities to come to them and wonder why their English always remains poor. If you have this proactive outlook(見解,觀點), then; you will see English opportunities wherever you go.
If you do not use your English beyond the classroom you will forget that English you know. Remember: USE IT OR LOSE IT! You can learn how to speak English better by speaking English more.
81. According to the passage, what do many Chinese students think of their English?
(No more than 12 words)
82. Why can't some Chinese students find suitable words to express themselves? (No more than 6 words)
83. According to the writer, what should be the goal when you talk with others in English? (No more than 1 word)
84. By "proactive language learners", what does the writer mean? (No more than 12 words)

Dear classmates,
We should try to keep the classroom clean and tidy. But recently I find some students make dirty marks on the walls or throw rubbish here and there in our classroom. In order to have a comfortable place for us to study, I make the following suggestions:
First, each of us should behave in a proper manner. We spend a lot of time in the classroom, so it is important for us to keep our classroom clean and tidy. Second, we should remind each other and stop those who behave badly if we see some rude behaviors in the classroom. Lastly, maybe we should collect some money to get the walls painted or keep some plants or flowers to freshen the air. If we take action, we will all enjoy a nicer learning environment.
That’s all. Thank you
